Living things need each other.

All plants and animals need food. Producers are things that can make their own food. Plants are producers.

Plants use the sun's energy to make their own food. Consumers are things that eat plants and animals.

Carnivores, Omnivores, Herbivores

Consumers can be divided into three groups; carnivores, omnivores and herbivores.

An herbivore is an animal that only eats plants. A carnivore
is an animal that only eats other animals. An omnivore eats both plants and animals.

What is a Food Chain?

Together producers and consumers make up a food chain. A food chain is the order of food from one living thing to another. A food chain shows how plants and animals need each other for food.

Many food chains begin with the sun's energy. A plant gets energy from the sun to make its own food to help it live and grow. Then a mouse can eat the plant and get food and energy. Then a snake may eat the mouse for food and energy. Then a hawk might eat the snake. This is an example of a food chain.

Who is at the top of the food chain?

Humans are considered to be at the top of the food chain. That is if zombies are not around. Producers like plants are at the bottom of the food chain.
